Lambda and Razer Unveil a Linux Laptop for Machine Learning

Gaming brand Razer has teamed up with Lambda to launch the TensorBook, probably the best laptop for machine learning developers. It is supplied with special software.

The novelty has a 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, which supports a refresh rate of 165 Hz. The laptop is based on the Intel Core i7-11800H processor.

Lambda TensorBook comes with Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS, the Lambda Stack software package, and the PyTorch, Tensorflow, CUDA, and cuDNN tools. It also comes with a setup with additional installed Windows and the same set of machine learning tools.

The device comes with 64GB of RAM, a 2TB drive and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q graphics card with 16GB of GDDR6 video memory.

A word from Lambda CEO Steven Balaban

“Most machine learning engineers don’t have a dedicated laptop with a GPU, which forces them to share resources on a remote machine, which slows them down,” said Lambda CEO Steven Balaban. “When you connect to a remote server via SSH, you don’t have any local data or code, and it’s even hard for you to demonstrate your model to your colleagues. The Razer x Lambda Tensorbook solves this problem. It comes pre-installed with PyTorch and TensorFlow, allowing you to quickly train and demonstrate your models, all from a local GUI.”

Lambda Tenzorbook is a professional solution from a set of pre-installed software, the laptop comes with Ubuntu Linux and Lambda Stack software package for research and deep learning, it includes TensorFlow, PyTorch, cuDNN, CUDA and others. The laptop costs between $3,500 and $5,000.

Laptop for Machine Learning: general recommendations

With thousands of cores capable of working simultaneously, the GPU is many times more efficient than the CPU in many tasks. Tasks related to artificial intelligence and neural networks are one of the areas in which RTX GPUs reveal their potential to 100%.

From the “gaming” segment, take the one that is cheaper and has more guarantees, and also so that the officers are closer to you. You can find official service centers in your region on the website of the laptop manufacturer (and only there, and not just look in Google).

In the perspective of 5-7 years, we advise you to buy workstations or a corporate business class. Remember business class models:

  • Dell Latitude
  • HP EliteBook
  • Lenovo ThinkPad E-series, L-series, T-series, X-series
  • HP ProBook

And also take into account the workstations:

  • Dell Precision
  • HP ZBook
  • Lenovo ThinkPad P-series

We generate more and more information every day with all the technologies we use (smartphones, computers, tablets, etc.). All these devices generate a huge amount of digital material. Data is stored in digital databases and is a significant source of information. Without proper processing and an effective analytics strategy, it would all just be a jumble of bytes growing. This is where machine learning comes in, allowing users to leverage the value of this insight. Of course, it is impossible to imagine that all this can be done without the necessary equipment.
